Heart palpitations during pregnancy are relatively common problem and are most often harmless. There doesn’t have to be anything going wrong with the heart to palpitate during pregnancy. But all that said; it should never be ignored.

 

During pregnancy there may be significant shift in blood volume and increase in hormone, especially progesterone. These factors add extra overload to the heart resulting in rapid heart action. This may not be seen before pregnancy, unless you have any other condition which puts extra pressure on heart or any heart disease. For a normal people, these heart palpitations will go after pregnancy and you may sometimes experience it by some emotional reactions like anxiety, stress, nervousness, fear or any physical exertions, which every normal individuals experiences and is perfectly normal. Some medications taken during pregnancy may also cause heart palpitations.

 

If you think heart palpitations occurs very frequently and are irregular or if it is associated with shortness of breath, chest pain, excessive sweating, dizziness or fainting attacks you may need immediate medical attention. Contact your caregiver or hospital immediately.

Some of the factors that cause heart palpitations during pregnancy are:

  • Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol
  • Certain medications
  • Fever

Besides these factors, there may be some other conditions or deficiencies which cause heart palpitations during pregnancy and these include:

  • Anemia
  • Magnesium deficiency
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Low level of oxygen
  • Change in blood pressure
  • Thyroids disorders

Heart palpitations in pregnancy may just be normal and may not suggest any serious complications. But it is always wise to get your heart checked for any abnormalities in your heart that may include but not limited to inflammation of heart, mitral valve prolapse or any heart diseases.

 

How to Avoid Heart Palpitations During Pregnancy?

In order to prevent heart palpitations during pregnancy, first you should avoid the cause. If it’s the stress, stress relaxation techniques like resting quietly and taking a few deep breaths, listening to your favorite music or yoga might solve the problem.

 

If the heart palpitations during pregnancy are due to some deficiencies like anemia, taking foods rich in iron and vitamin C like liver, eggs, red meat, raisins, prunes, green vegetables and apricots might help. If it is due to magnesium deficiency, taking foods rich in magnesium like nuts, wheat bran, legumes and green vegetables might help.

 

If the heart palpitation in pregnancy is due to medications, replacing with alternative medications may help. Change in lifestyle and avoiding caffeine, nicotine and alcohol may also help to minimize the symptoms.

 

All that being said; heart palpitations may also indicate heart condition. So consulting your physician and getting checked is a most. Your doctor will may perform some tests like 24 hrs ECG to rule out any possibility of heart disease. Heart palpitations during pregnancy are usually normal, but never try to diagnose it by yourself online, you may regret later.
