With alcoholic induced liver damage, they get a condition known as ascites. This is basically a huge amount of fluid on the abdomen. It resembles fat, but upon closer inspection, you can tell that it sloshes and feels more like water. They usually have less than 6 months when that happens. You might also notice other signs such as jaundiced skin and eyes. This is caused by the liver's failure to remove bilirubin from the blood and excrete it in the bowels. Bilirubin is what turns stools brown so with liver failure, its common to see a person with white stools and yellow-brown eyes (in the part that's supposed to be white). This is because the brown bilirubin stays in the blood and turns the person the color of crap.
