mean to me? Ive been told that alcoholism runs in my family, and I was wondering what that really meant. Does that mean my liver is weaker because of my hereditary? Does it mean its more susceptible to alcohol or less susceptible? Does it mean I just have a greater chance to become dependent on alcohol?

Do not drink alcohol in excess. This does not mean you can't have one or two, but that is it. This is hereditary, but it also a habit like smoking which if you use the behavior long eneough you will become addicted. You only have a high chance of being an alcoholic if you like alcohol. This does not mean your weak but be aware of your past family history and don't repeat them, it does not mean do not have fun, it means taking responsibility for yourself.

My father and paternal grandparents raised us and they were alcoholics. I used to make the screwdrivers when I was little. I am 41 and rarely ever drink. I had a tequila shot on 4th of July but prior to that it's been years since I drank. If your mother drank while she was pregnant with you, you probably would have noticed any physical defects long ago so if not, you are probably fine.Just because your parents or grandparents were alcoholics doesn't mean you will become an alcoholic. You might become codependent because your job is to jump hop and skip around them when they are drunk. My father used to beat us when he got drunk so we were always trying to predict his every move and cater to him. Our job was to keep him happy so we wouldn't get beat up. That's codependency. You are in control of your own life and your own choices. If you choose to drink yourself into a coma everyday and everynight like your family did then you too will eventually become an alcoholic and let it control your life. You can choose to drink responsibily. What it means to you is that you have a choice just like they did. Choose wisely and be happy with yourself and those who love you.
