I find that that bamboo skewers are more cost efficient and less labor intensive (no need to build that fire!). Are you grabbing the wrong end of the poker? If you hold onto the HOT end and poke with the cool end you'll be too distracted by the smell of burning flesh to notice the eye pain! It works for me.

You really need to see if it only affects the one eye. Try poking yourself in the other and get back to us on if it hurts too.
