sharp pain in the left side of my abdomen

I just experienced the worst pain of my life that lasted for about ten minutes and then went away. I got a sudden sharp stabbing pain in my left side that got worst when I inhaled or tried to move even slightly. I felt like my side would rip open if I moved. I was almost convinced to go to the emergency room when the pain began to subside. What could this be? Should I go to the hospital if it happens again?The appendix is on the right side. I'm assuming that means that I can rule that out.

it might be Diverticulitis but there might be other causes like Perforated ulcer or some colon disorders.it is advice to see the doctor.

Do you suffer from kidney stones.
Did the pain radiate towards the groin.
Does it pain during micturation.
You can certainly rule out appendicitis since its on the right side.
The way you have described your pain, I think it might be a stone.
Consult a surgeon and if possible please write in detail about the episode.
