I have an 11 year old male collie who was diagnosed with lung cancer last September.Over the last few weeks I have noticed a marked increase in his panting. The panting is NOT coincident with the temperature as I have been consistently maintaining the home at approx. 75 degrees since he arrived to me.Has anyone had experience with this diagnosis in their dogs? Is the increased panting a way for him to try to get adequate O2 levels? Any info would be so greatly appreciated! There are no smokers in the home.Such wonderful helpful responses so far! Thank you ALL so much!

That could very well be the case, especially if his lung sounds have changed. Rasping? Gurgling? Put your ear to his chest if you don't have a stethoscope.Does he seem distressed? Have his exercise levels decreased? Those would also be signs that he's having trouble breathing.Your vet could probably give you more information.

panting, lack of activity, snappy behaviour all symptoms of end stage lung cancer.Yes, panting fullstop is a method of increasing 02 levels in the bloodstream.Add Canine protein supliment to his water intake.Hope this helps extend yours and his happiness.

oh my...I don't know if I can get thru this answer without breaking down. I lost my soulmate in Feb due to cancer...lung and...It was sudden. Started with getting tired out more easily. But he was almost 12, slowing down. Then some heavy breathing, panting and occasional cough...to the vet, x-rays and dignosis. Panting and heavy breathing became more laboured daily. Gooey eyes. Vet gave me prednisone to maybe ease some symptoms and eye drops.I had a week with him. I cherished every hour and every day with him, watching, waiting for the day to decide that the mere act of "living" was too much for him.2 days before the decision was made, he stopped eating. This really hit me, as food was his "most favorite" thing in his life. One night he could not sleep. He would not lay down..I figured the pressure of doing so made it too hard to breath. I knew the next day would be "the day". The next morning he could barely stand, he was so exhausted. There was no enjoyment left for himI called my vet to ease his pain.It was the last thing I could do for my "buddy" , for all the years he shared with me.My condolences. I wish you the best.....it is unbelievably hard.
