Barbara Cartland has far too many historical romances, and all of them are lovely. What I treasure is a book given by an aunt, "No Darkness for Love", a story about an impoverished girl who unwittingly gets herself engaged to a prince she thought is a poor artist! And then, there's Tracy Chevalier. Just grab any book with her name on it. She is a very versatile and very hardworking author. Her details in her historical novels make you fell as though you're there, wearing whalebone and chemisettes. John Jakes, of course, interweaves his own characters into important events in history. The trilogy on the American Civil War, "North and South", "Love and War", and "Heaven and Hell" are wonderful sagas anchored by several love stories and scandals. Definitely a must-read.
