Will my cat ever get along with my dog?

My cat is about 8 yrs old and my dog is 3, my dog was used to liveing with cats at our old house but once we moved in with my dad he wants to play with our cat whos neaver really been around dogs (and hes a big dog), they've been liveing together for alittle more than a year and the cat still hates my dog. Max(dog) just wants to play with Nipper(cat) but nipper still attacks him even when max just passes by...we just got another cat from a animal shelter and he tolorates the dog but still dont like him much but im mostly worried about nipper he wont even come upstairs when max is around...will they ever get along???

you know they say it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks well it is HARDER to teach an old cat new ones.i have seen the same thing at friends house had the cat before when he used to live in a place where he could not have dogs now he has dogs and the cat will not play with them only hisses and may try to swing at them with her paw.

my friend has a 2 year old pit bull and adopted a 3 year old cat. at first it was holy terror. it took nearly a month, now they all sleep together. the cat sleeps on top of the dog's stomach. the dog is female and the cat is male. the dog was around other cats before and the cat was used to being around small cat size dogs.at the very least they will talk it out in their own animal language and come to an agreement of toleration.best of luck to you.
