A friend of mine just had a pretty severe UTI. I've had several in my life and would like to help others avoid the pain, so here is the collective advice I've recieved.
BTW I haven't had a UTI in over fou years now:
Don't hold it! If you have to pee then pee. I used to pull the "there's a rest stop in 30 miles, I can make it until then" routine. BAD IDEA
Make sure you drink more water than anything else- especially if you're a heavy coffee drinker.
Pee after sex. This was a tip a nurse gave me after my third UTI in one year. She explained that (especially for women) penetration (with a partner or a toy) can force naturally occuring bacteria into the urethra. The bateria can spread through the rest of the urinary track and cause an infection.
