What causes eye pain when using the computer?

I know it is said sitting too close to the screen causes eye strain, but that is not all. Years ago when I played Atari games on a regular Tv set the eye pain was much worse than when using a monitor. Why is that? So then is there more to eye pain than just sitting too close?

Eye strain from staring at the screen. The glare and all causes eye strain, and if you stare at it, it hurts your eyes, especially after long periods of time.
