One in six women between the ages of 18-25 has one of the strains of HPV that causes cervical cancer.

Men are often carriers and have no symptoms at all.

I'm kind of sad that I'm too old for this vaccine. However I just read a piece of dribble (that I will not justify with a link) about how this accine will promote promiscuity. Your thoughts?

I've heard the argument that this will promote promiscuity, but I just don't by it. I have a hard time believing that anyone currently denies themselves sex because of HPV. AIDS? Yeah...that has scared people, but I doubt we'll see any change due to an HPV vaccine.

Besides that, isn't a bump up in promiscuity totally worth eliminating cervical cancer?

Not all cervical cancer is caused by HPV, but the majority is. Though in today's political climate (in the US, at least) nothing seems to be worth a bump in promiscuity to the fundies:P

There's been a long debate about whether or not to have a mass vaccination program here in the UK. I'm glad to say that Scotland is taking the lead and will be offering the vaccine to all teenaged girls. England and Wales are likely to follow in a few months time.

There were all the arguments about promiscuity here too, but I think the authorities formed the sensible opinion that preventing cervical cancer now was more cost effective than treating it later in life.

We'll see how it goes.
