My Pap smears came back abnormal 10+ years ago and my doctor performed a LEEP procedure, which is a minor procedure where they remove the abnormal cells with an electrical loop. This resolved the problem, but it recurred after a few years and developed into cervical cancer. It was suggested to me to have the LEEP done again or a hysterectomy since I was of advanced maternal age, so I had the hysterectomy. After the pathology results came back from my surgery, my surgeon told me I made the best decision I could have made because not only did I have cancer of the cervix, but it had also spread into my endometrium, which is the lining of the uterus. My experience is that they would do a LEEP or cold knife conization if the problem is not severe, but would perform more extensive operations such as a hysterectomy or a trachelectomy (that is when they remove only the cervix) if the problem is severe. Then, if needed they may do radiation or chemotherapy. I transcribe operative reports for a local hospital so am familiar with the various ways they treat someone with cervical cancer and know a little because of my own experience. If you are unhappy with the doctor's recommendations, then by all means seek out a second opinion. Hope this was of some help to you.
