a woman gets a pap smear every year from the 1st time she becomes sexually active and makes her 1st GYN exam every year unless there is a abnormal result. then it could be every few monthsthere are stages or degrees of Cancer- depends on when detected if treatable or not Cervical Cancer can occur at any age

Firstly your mother is not old. There are numerous types of cancer but you can pick up leaflets about cervical cancer at some pharmacies or your clinic.Cancer can occur at any age, I have had it 3 times now. Pap smears are what women have once a year after they have had an abnormal smear. If your mum needs someone to talk to I am here.

In the UK it's done every 3 years from the first year you become sexually active. It's to check for cervical (neck of the womb) cancer. I think pap smear is the American name for a cervical spear. It's a little bit embarrassing, but doesn't hurt, you just have to relax. You get the results in 2-4 weeks.

One thing I would like to add to address your edit.Cervical cancer has a direct correlation with certain strains of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). There are hundreds of strains of this virus but not all of them cause cervical cancer. The pap/cervical smears are looking for abnormalities that can lead to cancer that are caused by HPV. The group that has the lowest rate of cervical cancer are nuns who took their vows before having sex and never violated those vows. Menstruation or lack thereof does not play a role in whether or not a woman will develop cervical cancer.
