Using any excuse to justify drinking. Unable to control your drinking. Drinking and denying it. Drinking and denying you have a problem. Time lapses and awkward lapses in your memory. Not being able to hold your alcohol after one drink.Refusing to pay attention to those close to you when they tell you that you have a problem with drinking. Refusing to go to an AA meeting. Finding that people are sore at you because of something you did and do not remember doing.

My ex smelled of alcohol in the morning, like 8am and he had the shakes at a certain point during the day if he didn't have a drink. There were bottles on top of bottles in the recycling. He was a functioning alcoholic. He went to work everyday and paid his bills but he just always needed alcohol. These are just some of the signs that he showed.
