You would hope so, but in my experience of family practitioners they know nothing, my advice.. just go down to your local A&E they are far more competent there of dealing with problems beyond, the common cold, contaception, and the flu, anything beyond that and im afraid 9/10 their 'expertise' fails!!

you'd have thought so wouldn't you. But in my experience they ask YOU all the things that are wrong with you then tell you all the things that MIGHT be causing it. Then they tell you to come back if it hasn't cleared up in a week. For that they get, how much?

Hello,(ANS) My dad was a family doctor (GP) based in Liverpool & worked for 35years to help people. Doctors like my dad where a generation of doctors that were very solidly trained & had extremely good quality skills. Sadly, some of the doctors I've had the misfortune to come into contact with now seem to have dreadful skills in contrast to my father.NOTE: A good doctor with what I term old fashioned doctoring skills would certainly make the diagnosis of Pneumonia without much difficulty as opposed to just a cold or mild flu. **To be fair pneumonia being a respiratory condition can be quite difficult to clearly diagnose in some people, in some cases it can only be confirmed by samples being sent to a lab for analysis.**If the pneumonia is acute (very bad) yes! the doctor would know pretty quickly.Ivan

You could probably also be able to tell if someone has pneumonia simply by asking them what does their chest feel like? does it feel like a heavy weight sitting on top of their chest? and are they finding it hard to breathe?. Also you can tell alot by what they cough up. If the flem is a very dark green with spots of red in it, then he needs to see a doctor as soon as possible. Cheers and good luck.

Yes,the Doctor can tell whether any body is having pneumonia or not.The medical name of pneumonia is pneumonitis,in simple words it is infection of lungs.Even a lay man with some knowledge can guess fairly accurately whether some body having pneumonia or not.The common features are fast breathing ,indrawing of chest, dullness in chest, sound coming from chest, fever and cough may or may not be there .The diagonosis is confirmed by the Doctor from x ray,and clinical examinations.

They need to do a chest x-ray to confirm it, but he should be able to tell you if your symptons are similar to those of pneumonia
