...the tip of my thumb after smashing said thumb? At first the thumb swelled up and there was bruising on the soft side of my thumb. There was barely any bleeding under the nail. The swelling went down, and the bruising is almost gone, but the tip of my thumb is somewhat numb, except if I try to use the thumb to push buttons or grab something, it hurts. Underneath the skin, it looks like there are bits of blood from broken blood vessels, however this might not be the case.

yep, sounds like a fracture; try taking anti-inflammatory medicine like advil/motrin/ibuprofen to help with pain.

You certainly can break the bone in the tip of your thumb, called the distal phalanx. But barring any extenuating circumstances (are you a famous concert pianist...is a bone sticking out of an open wound) there's not much to be done about it. Troubling about the story is: what do you mean by "tip" of the thumb. The closer to the joint, the more concern about the injury. Also, how long ago was the injury? The swelling could have caused pressure on the nerves, resulting in numbness; but you say the swelling is gone. The feeling should have returned. Here's my advice. Go see a doctor if: there's significant deformity there's pain after 4 weeks you can't move the joint fully there's severe pain with motion of the finger there's numbness or weakness
