Urinary Tract Problem?

My husband has experienced what appears to be blood in his urine a couple of times in the past month. It was darkish red to rust colored. He is diabetic and has a heart condition. He is in his mid-40s. He has had kidney stones before and thought this was probably the same thing except this time there has been only mild discomfort not the excruciating pain he had in the past. He went to the Dr. today but the urine sample contained no blood. They did find a large kidney stone but did not seem to think it was the cause of the dark red blood in his urine due to its position in the kidney (detected by x-ray) and the lack of significant pain. They are scheduling a cat scan and a bladder examination soon. I am just curious what else could be causing the bloody discharge if it is not the kidney stone?

Prostate problems, or if he was recently hit in his lower back, in the area of the kidneys, it could cause blood for a little bit... but nothing long term.

Several different kidney problems can cause blood in the urine, including kidney damage from NSAIDs (like ibuprofen, aleve, etc). Muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis) can also cause your urine to be this color, as the myoglobin (which is red) from the damaged muscle is excrete through the kindey. Kidney stones can also definitely do this. However, the doctor will keep checking if these symptoms persist to rule out cancers of the bladder/kidney.

This could be prostatitis, but the occult (hidden) blood should show up under microscope. If this happened after intercourse, sometimes that is a normal thing with middle age men. Also diabetes could be a contributing factor.There are lots of other things it could be that your Dr. will need to go into with you. If it is not already scheduled, I urge you to see a Urologist. This is their field and they will be able to check it out thoroughly.Good Luck.
