Aside from the obvious response (see a vet), I am just curious as to whether or not anyone knows what could cause this?I have a dog who is 12 years old... seems to be in great shape, although he lost a tooth about 2 years ago and has developed a huge growth (he smells, and I think this is the cause) in place of the tooth (this has been checked, the vet says it is not bothersome). Also he has an undescended testicle... so now you know his whole health history. Also, there was a death in the family last month, so the dog may be affected by no longer seeing this person (who lived in the house).Yesterday I noticed my dog is limping, his right front paw affected. I thoroughly checked his leg and paw and he exhibits no pain at all. This has been coming and going since last night... what could cause this/should I be concerned? I am taking him to a vet if this continues for a week (he is still going up and down stairs fine). Thanks for any help!

You may want to wait a little less than a week. He could have a condition that will worsen as time goes on. I know you figure he is an older dog and must die sometime, but why not have a vet take a look sooner to see if you can give him a better quality of life before he dies?

Animals hide their pain. Are his eyes dilated even in a light environment? My vet said this a sign of pain.

this couldbe caused by a hairline fracture, for example puppies can often get this and it heals by itself, i would expect this to be the problem, but your very wise to take him to a vet

It could be something small like a thorn or splinter in his paws. Or as suggested previously he might have something wrong with his joints. He might have even sprained or torn a muscle (which has happened to my dog). The vet can provide you with anti-inflammatory medications if this is the case.
