You don't have conjunctivitis. Eyes tend to dry up while sleeping. I use eye drops every night before going to bed and during the day. It helps. ☺

Allergies to your heating system and the dust it spreads through the house. Have your vents cleaned and that should help.

You have allergies, and due to that, you rub them, and then you've developed conjunctivitis (pink eye). How do I know? I have allergies, my daughter has allergies (she's allergic to 18 different alergens!), my mother was allergic to EVERYTHING....we all had those symptoms.Get on some Zyrtec or Claritin, see your doc for those and eye drops (prescription).

Your symptoms fit so many eye conditions, and I see that a lot of people are offering sensible suggestions. Based on my own experience, since I am not a doctor and cannot see your eyes for myself, there is an alternate possibility. Chronic keratitis can cause eye redness and tearing, as well as "gooey and dry crusty stuff" around the eye. It is an inflammatory process that can lead to the development of concretions. Concretions are like grains of sand that build up in the tissue of the upper eyelid and eventually work their way to the surface just like most foreign bodies in the human body. As they emerge from the tissue they track across the surface of the eye leaving scratches and abrasions - the sense that something is in your eye. The eye reacts to this foreign body by producing more tears to flush the object out of the eye.You need to see an ophthalmologist as soon as you can. If you have developed chronic keratitis you can eventually start to experience scarring on your cornea. The doctor will probably put fluoresceine stain into your eye and then look at it under the blue light. If your symptoms have made you sensitive to such a bright light, ask the doctor to apply a topical anaesthetic to make you more comfortable. The doctor will probably evert (flip up) your eyelid and look at the surface under the blue light. If they are not willing to do so, please ask them to humour you and do this. Concretions take up the stain and if you have some, they will show up like a constellation of stars in the night sky.Chances are that you do not have this problem, but your sympoms also fit this condition along with many others. As long as you are suffering from the sensation of a foreign body in your eye there is a risk of a scratch on the cornea getting infected and you run the risk of developing ulcers on your cornea.Do not fool around with your eyes. Get to an ophthalmologist sooner rather than later. Do not see an optomestrist - they do not have the ability to diagnose eye diseases and disorders; they specialize in prescribing corrective lenses. My experience with symptoms like yours comes from a very rare genetic disorder which includes many symptoms affecting the eyes. I live every day with your symptoms, so I know how painful and frustrating they can be. This is not intended as medical advice - I am not a doctor! I am merely offering you anoher possible explanation for your condition.Good luck!
