and he seems to be burping a lot, what can I do? Ryry is 8yrs old and has kidney problems, diagnosed a couple months ago. Within the last few days he has stopped eating willingly, and now he won't take water by mouth. I'm giving him subcutaneous fluids, so I don't think he can become dehydrated, and I am giving him a mixture of NutraCal/chicken baby food/plain canned pumpkin (for fiber) with an oral syringe at least 4 times a day. So he IS getting nutrition, but he is obviously depressed if he won't eat or drink. And he has been gulping air/ burping. There may be air being pushed into his throat when I force-feed him, but I think he is also gulping air, maybe because his throat is sore? The burping is making him uncomfortable. I am taking him to the vet tomorrow (the soonest anyone could see him), but I don't want him to be in discomfort all day until then. I'm also concerned about potential problems with his mouth drying out if he isn't taking his fluids by mouth. He fights me if I try to give him water with an eyedropper.Edit: Ryry died tonight. I'm glad he isn't in any discomfort anymore, but I will miss my little baby so much. :(Ryry was very young to have kidney problems, he didn't eat foods on the recalled pet foods list, I suppose it was genetic. He also had a bad heart murmer since he was very small. I wish I could have had his vet see him, but I have the feeling they wouldn't have been able to do anything- his kidney problems were pretty bad and his vet wasn't very optimistic about his survival to begin with. There is only one emergency vet around here, and I've had problems with the way they handle animals before, I know if I took Ry there it would have stressed him out in his remaining time. So... I guess there wasn't much I could have done, but it is still very upsetting thing. I'm glad I had Ryry for the time I did, and I know he life wouldn't have been as long or as happy if I hadn't rescued him.Thank you to everyone who answered, your advice and concern is very much appreciated.

hold him to his food and water and keep it by him all the time if this does not work take him to the vet.

Glad you are taking him back to the vet asap. Cats do get depressed when they are sick. The last time I had to syringe feed one I put more water in the food and then gave some water in the syringe to finish feeding and rinse his mouth out. Just love him a lot but keep him quiet and warm. Did you get the home diet from your vet? There are commercial diets for cats with kidney troubles but they can be expensive. He needs to be on low protien. I usually use babyfood meat and oat cereal but pumpkin is a good choice too and a lot of cats like it. You could mix the cereal into the pumpkin and make it rather soupy. Good luck.

Please take him to an emergency vet. If he is not eating or drinking anything and is gulping air, it is vital that someone see him. He is not too young for kidney issues- cats are much like humans in the issues that they are born with. I have treated cats as young as 1 with chronic kidney issues. Take him to a vet as this sounds like something that absolutely can not wait.
