It isn't me with the problem(I'm only 11), it's my dad. His back is hurting badly and he is having trouble breathing. we're going to the ER but is there any home remedies he could possibly try?he tried that icy hot balm stuff but it only works for like, a second!I'll try to answer all of calyx156's questions! lol. Ok, he is not a smoker, at all, positively not which means he doesn't have emphysema. No cough-like symptoms. No job that has those details, he works in a clean, chic area (he is a computer engineer) No protective gear!

Tell me if you need me to clarify this procedure, it's hard to explain but my aunt who is a nurse told me this and it's worked well with my back pain:Lie down on the floor with your feet facing a wall. Start getting your feet onto the wall, almost "crawling" them up, until eventually your bum is right up to the wall and your legs are flat and your feet are upwards. So basically your upper body all the way down to your bum is on the floor, and your thight and legs are flat on the wall. The body looks like an "L". What this does is straighten out the vertebrae, it really stretches out the back and feels great. He may need assistance lifting his feet up onto the wall.

I am a HUGE fan of sending folks to the Chiropractor and/or the massage therapist when their backs are hurting. The "trouble breathing" part needs some more explanation, tho'. Is your dad a smoker? Is he asthmatic? Does he have emphysema? Does he have cold-like symptoms, ie a cough w/ lots of mucous and phlegm coming up? Does he do a job where he's exposed to a lot of dust, chemicals, hazardous waste? What does he do for work? Does he wear protective gear? I think the going to the ER part is a really excellent idea. Please let us know how it goes for your dad and what is wrong! Thanks! If it's just a cold or cough, I will be happy to give you some ideas about what can be done at home. If this is a more serious condition, the ER is truly the best place for your dad.

I am not a huge fan of sending people to a chiropractor. If they're that bad then they need a doctor, he can diagnose the problem and then refer the person to a specialist. We're not doctors here although some would like to think so. A person should always see their doctor first, the doctor can then send the person to a chiropractor if needed.

Back pains can occur as a result of many things. Even simple tasks such as housework can cause spinal problems over a long period of time. Is it possible your father pulled his back doing any lifting at work?

It's not impossible to have emphysema when you don't smoke... it's rare, but possible.
