I had a pap come back with abnormal cells once a long time ago. I had a biopsy. It wasn't anything serious. Read the site I found on the internet.

Anything and nothing - unfortunately, an abnormal PAP doesn't mean that you have cancer. But, you can get an abnormal result from pre-cancerous cells (which sound scary, but it's not...think about it pre-cancerous = not cancerous but could be...wouldn't that include just about all cells?!)You could have HPV (which is an STD that about 90% of women have now - they have recently come out with a vaccine for this disease for younger girls, as it is one of the causes of cervical cancer)I have had 2 abnormal PAPs as well, went for a colposcopy (which hurt like hell and came back completely normal) and a procedure where they scraped cells from my cervix (also which came back normal)...I wouldn't worry about it. Those things are necessary but I think the doctors like to worry us about them unnecessarily.

I had the same thing happen to me. I ended up having a cervical lesion which is caused by cronic cervical inflammation (CCI) (symptoms include chronic yeast infections and urinary tract infections). My Gyn did a biopsy and a cervical scrape twice. I have had normal PAPs since. CCI can be caused by HPV which is a very common STD that can lead to ovarian and cervical cancers. Be sure to get checked out for all of these things. Good Luck!

Your Pap results probably came back from the lab labeled ASCUS. ASCUS is an acronym for Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance. This term is used in the Bethesda System for reporting Pap smear findings and indicates that some flat (squamous) cells look unusual and may or may not be pre-malignant or malignant. Of all Pap tests with an ASCUS reading, 90-95% are caused by benign conditions, chiefly infections. The remaining 5-10% prove to be precancer or cancer. You should sit down with your doctor and have him/her explain to you exactly what was wrong with your Pap smear and what needs to happen next. Normally with ASCUS, a follow up smear is performed anywhere from 3 to 6 months depending on your particular situation. Your doctor knows best. Make a follow up appointment and get all of your questions answered. Good luck.
