Of course you can, it is just as bad an affliction, and is equal in how it is viewed.

you can claim benefits for mental health problems.. it's not just physical. However, the forms are designed for people suffering with physical problems so you need to be very specific and detailed when you fill it in. You need to remember to detail everything that your illness prevents you or inhibits you from doing in day to day life. Its a very hefty form, but you can go to your local CAB for help filling it in. hope that helps

they can tell whether it is fake cos you will have to be signed off by your doctor who will if they think you are messing around suggest other things apart from signing you off

40% of people on incapacity benefit are on it cos of mental health problems. So, yes, you can claim. You prove it with a letter from your GP or psychiatrist.
yes to both. you can claim to be disabled due to mental reasons, but it's a tough sell even if you a guinuine. Jd

If someone has one leg you can see the disability, but if someone has depression you may not notice. Depression is a debilitating illness. Every single person today living anywhere in the UK could get that illness. You may be super fit right now, but one day something could trigger it. When it does you will know just how bad you feel. Worse than that, you will realise just how much everyone else can not understand the way you feel. Until you´ve been through the hell of depression you should have an open but fair mind. Calling someone fit because you see no problem can often make the individual worse.

Of course you can my dear.Within my circle of friends we often say now that we dont blame anyone taking this route when you see people that have only been here a few weeks with more shopping than they can carry. We have seen this more so now in our local market town,we go once a week to the market, but are thinking of stopping, its a little scarey for us with no familiar faces anymore.

Yes you can claim incapacity benefit for mental illness. At first you just have to fill in the form (which is mainly designed for physical illness), along with a certificate from your doctor or psychiatrist. If you are still claiming after a few months then you usually get called to go and have an appointment with the special DSS appointed doctor who will asses you and what medication you take, and they will then decide if you are still unfit for work. I believe these assesments take place around every 18 months for as long as you claim incapactiy benefit.

You can claim incapacity and DLA though for both you need extensive information from your consultant psychiatrist and care coordinator (either a social worker, approved social worker or community psychiatric nurse)I did a social work placement in mental health and found it neigh on impossible to get the appropriate benefits in place for my clients who were unable to work. The forms are incredibly long and complex and if filled out incorrectly, patients would stand not a chance of getting a pennt from the state even if it was clear to all that they were incapable of holding down a job.It is not as easy as people might think.
