My husband has congestive heart failure. Spent a month in the hospital back in 2005. He has irregular heartbeat and he is being held together with meds. Right now, BP, cholesterol are fine, and he looks very healthy, aside from some extra pounds. This past week, the doctor took him off coumadin and put him on transdemral nitroglycrine. I know he sugar coats everything so I wont worry, but this doesnt sound good. Can anyone tell me why a doc would do this??Thanks7 heartt attacks?? DUDE!! Do you walk around with a pocket deflibrator?

Well, my Dad was taken off coumadin a year or so after his heart attack, so maybe this is just a standard improvement (my grandmother never came off of coumadin). His heart attack was in 1998 resulting in the congestive heart failure. He just received a prescription for nitroglycerine in the last year, but has only taken it once. There's information below with more detail. Note: again, my grandmother had nitroglycerine for maybe 2 decades, took it frequently. She lived with congestive heart failure for about 27 years after her first heart attack at 50.

Coumadin, thins the blood, Doc probably wanted to make sure your husband didn't get a blood clot, so once the doc had done labs and your husbands pt was fine, he would take him off coumadin. Nitro patch will help control his heart symptoms. CHF is not a death sentance people live for yrs. Trust your Doctor. Help your hubby loose excess weight, that can hurt him alot, so low fat, no salt diet!! If still concerned ASK the Doc what he's doing. Remember without you he wouldn't have a job, so ask your questions!!!!!!!!

Coumadin is a blood thinner so if the Dr. took him off of it he may be getting better. The nitro patch suggest that he still may be having angina(chest pain). The highest risk of having a heart attack is usually 1 yr after the first incident. Sounds like he still needs to lose some weight. After having or being diagnosed with a heart disorder a person notices pain in their chest more closely than a person that dose not have a heart problem. Reassure him that you are their for him and will go thu it together. You gave no age but the younger one is the harder it is to adjust to a heart problem. This is my experience from having 7 heart attacks first one at 36.
