I was reading an article about birth control usage and other culture's beliefs. In most countries where there is still a high machismo attitude, conversations about sex education are taboo. Because of this, some American migrants are unwilling to use condoms, and other forms of birth control despite the large amounts of teenage pregnancy amongst these populations. Do you think, in our culture, that there should be interventions promoting condom use among migrant populations? Do you think there would be any change considering the large level of machismo beliefs that are still strong in migrant culture? Or, do you believe that we should leave well enough alone and allow women from other countries to decide if they are going to "Americanize" themselves and stray from their culture, or keep with their beliefs?Troll Shark, you are always good for a smile! :) Here: http://her.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/21/2/230this is the site where I was reading the article that inspired my question. See what you think! :)

I feel that there should. Not so much to mess with their culture, or whatever, but to prevent teens from having kids, and to prevent unwanted pregnancies that people can't afford. It's not so much about changing the culture, as it is about plain old sexual awareness. They say abstinence is the safest sex, but if you're willing to participate in the reproductive process before marriage, it definitely helps to know what's out there.

You're confusing male power and religious influence. See what I mean?Migrants = CatholicCatholics = Against birth controlNothing about machismo in that equation. As an added thought, what exactly would you say is the correlation between condom use and "machismo?" I for one don't consider myself a particularly macho guy, but I would prefer not to use a condom because the sensation is that much better bareback. But hey, that's just me. Maybe everyone else in the world is just macho.DAMN - now I have to call my therapist. I'm not macho like the other boys.
