Doctors test urine using two methods. First is the cheap and easy and very useful one called the "dipstix" test which, as the name suggests, involves dipping a test strip (which has about 10 different reagents) into the urine sample. It looks for things like pH, specific gravity (concentration of urine), glucose, ketone, nitrites, protein, urobilinogen, white and red blood cells. It sounds like you probably had some blood cells in your urine (the test strips tells you that you have either none, small moderate or large amont). It's not uncommon for women of your age to have blood in the urine - its often due to tiny amount of menstrual blood going into the urine jar.Other causes of blood in the urine can be: bladder or kidney infection, kidney stone, bladder or kidney tumour, or physical damage to the urinary tract.Talk to your doc. They can explain.Oh the 2nd method: look uner the microscope and count the number of cells they can see per mL

Red or white blood cells. Blood cells are not found in urine normally. Inflammation, disease, or injury to the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra can cause blood in urine. Strenuous exercise, such as running a marathon, can also cause blood in the urine. White blood cells may be a sign of infection or kidney disease.
