My 14 year old has had kidney problems since Feb 07. she has been put on medicine from the vet to help as she was loosing a lot of protein in her urine. Anyway since then she has been ok ish. Drinking a lot but has been eating ok. However recently she has been very picky with her food, she will eat human food but not dog food. We have just given into this although she is eating half of what she used to and is very sleepy. My question is : For the past two days her drinking has decreased???? Is this a bad sign? I am confused as to what this means. I dont want her to die in agony but dont know how kidney failure progresses?Does anyone know? She had rice crispies this morning with milk so is still eating.

It's probably best to get her checked by the vet, but she's probably just holding out on her dog food because she knows that if she doesn't eat it, she'll get something better! What would you rather have? Dog Food or Rice Krispies and milk?!

The dog really needs to be seen by the vet.

Just use more fluids as possible. Could be a bad sign, but I could be wrong. I'll pray for you.

the dogs condition is getting worse. i would take it back to the vet and get them to run another lot of blood tests. see what is going on.. her kidneys might be failing and she will die painfully if you dont take her back to the vets.. if she isnt drinking much then she may be dehydrated, and should be put on a drip.

The reason she is picky with her food is that some foods will make her feel nauseous and some will actually cause pain so she instictively avoids those that will make her feel ill. You need to keep her away from food with a high fat content and oftern high protein food will have a negative affect. I suggest you take her back to the vet and have her creatinine levels checked which will let you know how well/poorly her kidneys are now functioning. My vet said to me that perhaps the way to look at it was if your pet if having more good days then bad days then just look after her well. If s/he is having more bad days that good days then perhaps it is time to let go.I hope this helps.

Cow's milk is never a good idea for a dog, it can give them diarrhea. It is time to take her back to the vet and follow the instructions from the vet. If she has kidney problems and you are feeding incorrectly that can make it worse.

I think she needs food that is low in protein Your vet should have told you. Ring up and ask.

Many owners of dogs with kidney disease change their dogs to a raw diet of meat, edible bones and offal. This species appropriate and highly digestible food seems to help with this condition. The yahoo raw feeding group has many people who could help you.
