...bacterial meningitis? Anybody have success stories to share? My newborn baby girl became extremely fussy one morning when she was 2 weeks old, when she began to feel hot and look pale I took her imediately to Cook Children's Hospital where they did spinal taps and blood work and informed me she has a rare case of bacterial meningitis. The bacteria made its way from her spinal fluid to her brain and did significant damage to her right frontal lobe. At one point she was in extremely critical condition and they did not expect her to move the left side of body or hear- she has proved them wrong and now 3 weeks later she is moving everything symetricly and passed her hearing test. Mental retardation is a possibility and we just have to wait and see if she hits her milestones. She looks and acts like a perfectly normal baby her age and I'm wondering if it possible that her brain could use other parts and allow her to have a normal, happy life. Does anybody have a similar story or know the outcome of another child who this has happened to?

Oftentimes when there is brain damage other parts of the brain take over for the damaged area. Neurons don't grow back but seeing as how the baby is less than a year old and still in the earliest stages of development then I wouldn't think that she would be mentally retarded.Best of luck

I dont have anyone who went through this, but my heart goes out to you! The fact that she proved the doctor wrong is a very good sign. Lets face it doctors only know what they have learned and what they have seen. Miracles happen every day and your precious daughter seems to be one of them. It seems she has alot in her favor already, she beat the odds and has a wonderful mom fighting for her. I wish you the best of luck with her.
