First of all, speak to a health care provider in your area. If you are at college, get to the health center for advice.Infectious disease is a very regional type of practice. What is done in one area of the country is not necessarily true for another due to different strains of bacteria. Therefore, a forum like this could NOT POSSIBLY give you a correct answer. By this I mean other antibiotics might be better. If you do not have a primary care provider, please call the health dept as they will be aware of the case being reported. They will be able to advise you as to the proper recommendations.Good luckMBetz MS RPA-C

Are you saying the student has meningitis caused by Neisseria or are you saying they have had Neisseria meningitidis isolated in culture from their person? The two are VERY different scenarios. If, indeed, you are talking about the illness meningitis, then yes..prophylactic treatment will more than likely be required for the entire class. If the latter from above, then don't worry...this situation is more common than most people or practitioners realize and it's unlikely there will be any such recommendations.
