...lower back and abdomen? This guy I know has a patch of hair on his lower abdomen and his lower back. I've never seen a guy with that before. Is that common/normal?

Heck yes it's normal. They're men -- they're hairy. It happens.

yea ive seen it before ... ugh! i hate locker rooms for that gosh it's nasty!
