Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a chronic disorder that develops over a long period of time and it results from an inability of the heart muscle to pump enough blood to circulate efficiently through the body. When the heart fails to pump the blood effectively the kidney's cannot get rid of the sodium in the bloodstream and fluid pools in extrameties and especially in the lungs. This is why persons with congestive heart failure have trouble breathing Note: that it is not the same as tamponade, where their is actually fluid accumulating in the pericardium sac.Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath swelling in the arms and legs, difficulty sleeping due to trouble breathing, and maybe nausea and poor appetite. The most common cause of CHF are coronary artery disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), longstanding alcohol abuse, and disorders of the heart valves less common causes include viral infections of the heart muscle, thyroid disorders, disorders of the heart rhythm and many others.
