I have been doing ballet for many, many years now and about a month ago I noticed a bruise type thing under my nail on my second toe - a few weeks passed and then I noticed it was spilt in the middle! I highly doubt that it's my pointe (ballet) shoes so I suspect I kicked it against something without realizing it.It doesn't hurt, but it is only halfway on now and I see it lifting a bit. I don't know if I should pull it off, leave it and just cut it off when enough grows back, or just wrap it.I don't want it to intefere with my dancing but if there's no choice then I guess I'll have to get over it. Any adivce? Thanks

I had this same problem. The nail doesn't grow on that toe anymore, and I honestly have no idea why. But it doesn't hurt, and everything is O.K.Although, not having a nail might be worse for a woman than for me, so, you could ask a dermatologist.

Only take it off if its practically off and just sliding around. Try to wrap it with gauze or something to protect the skin as more nail grows. I've heard about this happening to ballet people a lot, just something you have to deal with I guess. Hope you feel better.

It likely is not going to be a problem for you, but since you take your dancing seriously and obviously respect your own body and health , I really urge you to just go visit your personal doctor to be certain. Don't stress out, best of luck, and keep on dancing!
