For me, A psychiatrist and a therapist were absolutely necessary.For deprression, after trying many things, Effexor was the best answer and for anxiety, I swear by neurontin. It made anxiety much more managable and it doesn't make you sleepy and blotto like some antianxiety meds do... though I have those like clonopin or zyprexa as well if things get too bad
