...causing this problem? What can it be if you feel there is something at the back of your throat and you try to get rid of it by clearing your throat, sometimes it might feel like hard to swallow? Dont want the "go to the doctor "answers, if you dont have an idea then i would rather have no answers. Obviously if it cant be solved with something simply and straightfoward then i will go but im asking for other peoples opinions & similar experiences.Snettorton, i appreciate your answer but all i asked was that if all someone was going to suggest was to go to the docs, i asked people not to bother answering at all. As i said i will go to the docs if all else fails. I have my reasons.

It could be allergy or pollution.

You may be having an allergic reaction to something which could be causing your throat to swell. Not to alarm you or anything, but do you have any anti-histamine handy? If not, get to the chemist and buy some Piriton. You can get it in syrup form or tablet form. If this does not help, then you will need to phone NHS Direct at the very least. And please, don't tell us what we cannot and cannot say in our answers. That's just rude and ungrateful.

Typically, you would know if it's an allergy because it would happen almost immediately after eating the food in question. It could be swollen glands, which are caused by almost anything. It could also be balls of "old food and proteins" stuck in the little pockets in the tonsillar area. Most people I know talk about the little "stinky balls" and that's what that is. I know several people that has happened to including myself. You may try to check for swollen glands from the outside or have someone you know (or check yourself) check to see if there is any visible swelling in the throat.

Dear Willow, If you think it's an allergy causing your problem, hayfever is rife at the moment, then try some anti-histamines from the chemist. Your pharmasist can advise. If you have a swelling in the throat the answer might lie in your name. Asprin, which is a bi-product of Willow is an anti-inflammatory. Take 2 tablets, not the soluable ones, crush and make a gargle with some water. Spit out, do not swallow. This is a classic treatment for throat infections and tonsillitus. It cleanses of bacteria and soothes inflamation and swelling. If the symptoms persist then consult your doctor.

Check your diet first. Are you eating a lot of cheese or drinking milk - this can cause mucus in the back of your throat. Try no milk products at all for a week. If this doesnt work, try cutting out wheat which has a similar reaction. If neither of these things help you, then you should g to the doctors as you may have low-level glandular fever (check if you have any lumps under your arms - if you have then you have probably got GF and you need plenty of rest and water and a light diet...but your doctor would advise you. Also often a this time of year there is a strong reaction by many people to oilseed rape pollen and this can give the reaction you describe along with slightly sticky eyes or tears. Finally check you are not drinking sugary drinks - look at ALL labels and ensure you are avoiding anything with sugar and any additivesAs you can see, there are LOADS of things that it can be, don't worry though, it may be a bit uncomfortable and it may take you a while to track down what it is, but you will solve it.A simple remedy is to drink blackberry leaf tea and nettle tea and start the day with hot water and lemon. But keep checking the food and drink you are imbibing. I presume you are NOT a smoker or a heavy drinker of course.

I have a lot of throat problems and it usually boils down to one of two things:1-If it's allergy season, I'm probably just having an allergic reaction to pollen or something. Lately that's been a big thing for me. I'll have sore throat and sometimes other allergy symptoms, such as sneezing. The throat will also be itchy in a can-i-stab-it-with-a-fork way. I can't take antihistamines such as Benadryl during the day because they make me fall asleep (I'm such a lightweight!) so I take Advil Cold & Sinus and that relieves many of my symptoms.2-If i'm starting a cold or a throat infection, I find gargling with a strong mouthwash, such as Listerine, works well. I don't usually use that stuff because I find it makes my teeth sensitive, but it kills all the crap in my mouth and throat, including the bad boys that are trying to start an infection (usually strepthroat). If you have full-on strep, this will NOT be enough, you'll need antibiotics. But if you just woke up with a sore throat, it might very well relieve your symptoms.Good luck!

Hi Assuming you have no other symptoms it is probably just a minor throat infection. Normally you would feel it mainly on one side. If you are not allergic to aspirin get some soluble aspirin and gargle with it before swallowing. You can also use listerine to help with it's antibacterial qualities. If it gets worse you can get a lozenge called strefen from chemist which is an anti-inflammatory for your throat. Drink plenty of water and relax. 'lumps' in throat often feel worse when you think about them. If not any better or you have any other symptoms seek help on Monday.
