I had the same thing, I found that doing different types of stretches for the lower legs was a big help.

you have shin splints. shin splints are NOT AN INJURY (OTHER ANSWERERS) they are just a condition where the muscle on your shin begins to detatch from the bone. it is very painful and totally understandable since you are 1. overweight and 2. just started running again. you need to take it easy. it will subside, but start out slow, not too fast, maybe even just walking. slowly build up as the pain subsides. and also, rest it. whatever your training schedule was, cut it in half. rest is paramount.

It is due to lactic acid build up. Breathing during running and high carbohdrate diet with genourous amount of gaterite will also help?

your muscles in your leg are get stronger so just strech for 20 mins. 10 mins before you run and 10 mins after. its ganna hert but streching should help the pain a little.

If the pain feels like its starting behind the shin bone it could be the start of shin splints. Try running on softer surfaces such as grass instead of tarmac/concrete. Mix up the types of exercise you are trying eg. rather than running 2/3 times a week run once, swim once and cycle once. Swimming is probably the best, especially if a bit over weight as it is very low impact and will increase your lung capacity quickest. If the pain continues when running go to the Docs.
