For any person who has done surgery for hyperplastic polyposis mainly in the rectum and sigmoid colon, what is the probability of its recurrence? Is there any cutting edge technology developed for this type of surgery.

I am afraid to say that the chances of recurrence of large colon polyps are moderately high. The importsnt factor is whether it is benign or malignant.

By defination polyps are any mass that arise from the bowel wall that protrude into the lumen.Incidence ranges from 10-50 percent and are usually multiple.Routine colonoscopy revel about 5 pecent of patients with polyps,The malignancy chance is directly propotional to its size.

Polyps can also be familial (inherited)type. Most of teh polyps are asymptomatic with rectal bleeding being the only complaint. The larger one present with frequent diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. The cancerous type arise from the adenomatous polyps which constitute 70 percent of the polyps removed at colonoscopy, but do not panic, not all of them progress to cancerous type.In fact less than 1 percent progress into the malignant type.

Luckily in your case it is the hyperplastic type which constitute the other 30 percent of polyps, they are usually small(les than 5mm) and of no consequence but to distinguish it from the cancerous type biopsy has to be done. The cutting edge technology treatment you mentioned is colonoscopy removal with biopsy foreceps or snare cautery. The larger ones may need piecemeal removal or primary surgical resection.
