emphysema? I have looked all over the internet for this information. I know the likelihood of these diseases are increased in smokers, but where can I find the real numbers?

This statistic is elusive. I looked at American Lung Assoc. website and found some statistics surrounding that. Here it goes. about 20% of Americans smoke, that's about 58 million people. There are 438,000 deaths per year directly attributed to smoking. So, less than one percent of smokers die from smoking each year. But that doesn't answer your question. I suspect there is no clear answer.

It's difficult to gauge, since a 5 pack per day chain smoker and a half pack per day casual smoker are both "lifetime smokers". As a ballpark, 10% for lung cancer, 30% for emphysema.

Your question entirely overlooks the large numbers of people who have heart attacks, strokes, oral, throat, bladder and stomach cancers that are directly related to cigarette smoking. These numbers add greatly to the misery caused by tobacco addiction.
